If you’re planning a visit to Derbyshire and the Peak District, then Chatsworth House and Gardens provide a great day out for all ages.
There are references to a manor in the Chatsworth area in the Domesday book, back then it was called Chetel’s-worth, meaning “the Court of Chetel”.
As you travel through the Chatsworth Estate, Chatsworth House comes into view. The building of the House itself began in 1553 and was completed in the 1560s by Bess of Hardwick, whose husband, Sir William Cavendish had died in 1557.
One of Chatsworth’s most famous residents was Mary Queen of Scots, who was brought to the House as a prisoner by the Earl of Shrewsbury in 1568. The Earl had been entrusted with her custody.
During her incarceration, Mary worked with Bess, the lady of the house on the Oxburgh Hangings, which can be seen at Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk.
Chatsworth House is open to the public, where you can explore 30 rooms. You can also wander around the beautiful gardens home to one of Europe’s tallest fountains, powered by the lake on top of the hill above Chatsworth. There are talks and tours everyday, and special events on throughout the year.
If you need something for the little ones to do, you can pay a visit to Chatsworth Farmyard and Playgound, which is just a short walk from the House. There’s also Chatsworth Park, an extensive part of the Estate featuring roaming sheep and deer and a great spot for a picnic.
Just a few miles from the House you can also pay a visit to the award winning Chatsworth Estate Farm shop in the village of Pilsley, where there is also a restaurant.
